A Glimpse Into the Future at Expo 2025 Osaka and What It Means for Packaging Innovation

For the first time since 1970, the world will gather on the artificial island of Yumeshimain for Expo 2025 Osaka from April to October 2025. With the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” the Expo is more than a showcase of futuristic technologies, it’s an invitation to rethink how we live, create, and coexist sustainably.

To stay ahead of industry trends and remain in the loop on the latest innovations, Myerton Packaging visited Expo 2025 in April. The event offered valuable insights into emerging technologies, sustainability practices, and consumer expectations that will influence the next generation of packaging solutions. Our goal was to gain insights that help shape packaging solutions for Australian brands to expand internationally. This wasn’t just about witnessing what’s next; it was about asking how we can play a role in building it. As global markets shift toward ethical consumerism and eco-conscious practices, we’re more motivated than ever to deliver smart, sustainable, and future-ready packaging solutions.

A Glimpse into Society 5.0
At the heart of the Expo is Japan’s “Society 5.0” concept, a human-centered society that fuses digital innovation with real-world solutions. By integrating AI, IoT, robotics, and biotechnology, the goal is to create a smarter, more inclusive world that meets the SDGs.

Innovation on a Global Stage
With 161 countries and 9 international organizations participating, Expo 2025 will be a melting pot of cultures and cutting-edge tech. From carbon-neutral energy to flying cars, AR/VR-powered virtual experiences, and autonomous mobility systems, the event will showcase what the future can look like.

Making Social Impact Personal
Expo 2025 isn’t just about tech. It also tackles social issues. The Japan Pavilion will explore how we live in harmony with our environment, featuring a “living” pavilion powered by biogas and CO2 recycling. Visitors can engage with pressing global challenges and leave inspired to act.

Design, Culture & Global Connectivity

The Grand Roof Ring, a 2km circular wooden structure, will serve as both a symbol and a functional element, uniting visitors under one roof. Cultural pavilions will offer immersive experiences from around the world, celebrating diverse perspectives and deepening global understanding.

German Pavilion

The German Pavilion focuses on the critical theme of the circular economy; a key to building a sustainable, zero-waste future. With every element of the pavilion reflecting circularity, Germany aims to inspire global collaboration around closed-loop systems that minimize resource consumption. This theme ties into the Expo’s subtheme “Connecting Lives” and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for innovation and sustainable cities. As a global leader in industrial innovation, Germany invites the international community to explore how circular practices can drive climate action and reshape how we live and produce.

As a provider of environmentally responsible packaging solutions, Myerton Packaging is committed to offering closed loop recycling options that help businesses reduce waste and minimize environmental impact. By embracing circularity, we empower brands to be part of the global movement toward climate-friendly, sustainable economies.

The Australia Pavilion, themed “Chasing the Sun,” celebrates the country’s vibrant energy, diverse people, and stunning natural environment, while also addressing key priorities of sustainability, inclusivity, and collaboration. Designed by Australian firm Buchan, the pavilion draws inspiration from the iconic eucalyptus tree, symbolizing the dynamism and diversity of Australian society. Inside, visitors will embark on an immersive journey that highlights Australia’s fauna, ocean environment, and the deep cultural connection of First Nations peoples to the land, reflecting their contributions, perspectives, and interests.

Sustainability is at the heart of the pavilion, with repurposed materials from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games being used in its construction. The pavilion will also promote gender equality, inclusion, and the celebration of Australia’s vibrant multicultural society, advocating for social, economic, and political inclusion as key to global progress. Additionally, the pavilion will foster regional collaboration, offering a platform for sharing ideas, showcasing solutions, and forging new partnerships to address the world’s biggest challenges. With a program of dynamic cultural events and strategic business discussions, the Australia Pavilion aims to showcase the country to the world while working towards sustainable global development.
