Exploring Global Opportunities: Myerton Packaging Visits Tokyo Big Sight

As part of our ongoing efforts to support Australian brands in expanding globally, Myerton Packaging recently visited five leading exhibitions at Tokyo Big Sight Hall in Japan. This event provided a valuable opportunity to explore the Japanese market, gain first-hand insights into consumer behavior, and assess potential avenues for local Australian producers aiming to export internationally.

With over 56,000 attendees across the three days, the exhibitions served as a vibrant hub for exchanging ideas, discovering new trends, and understanding the evolving landscape of the food and packaging industries. It was also a rare chance to observe how consumers interact directly with producers; insights that will help us better tailor solutions for our clients back home.

Premium Food Show

One of the exhibitions we visited at Tokyo Big Sight was the Premium Food Show, which showcased global food diversity while spotlighting four key categories: Halal, vegetarian, gluten-free, and organic. This focus reflects not only a growing global appetite for healthier and more ethical food choices, but also a deeper awareness of dietary needs and cultural preferences in today’s interconnected world.

But the conversation didn’t stop at what we ate. It extended to how it’s packaged. Sustainability is no longer a trend; it’s a priority. Companies are actively exploring innovative food options that are not only good for the body but also better for the planet. This shift is creating exciting new opportunities in packaging, as businesses seek environmentally conscious solutions to complement their forward-thinking products.

Fabex is one of Japan’s most anticipated food industry events. This year’s edition brought together three powerful exhibitions under one roof: Fabex (The World Food and Beverage Great Expo), the Dessert, Sweets & Bakery Exhibition, and The Future of Rice Exhibition.

Fabex

Celebrating three decades of professional trade fair success, Fabex is one of Japan’s largest and most established food and beverage expos. Vendors from across the globe gather to exhibit an impressive variety of products. From canned and processed foods to dairy, baked goods, fresh produce, and specialty ingredients. The exhibition also provides insights into Japan’s rapidly evolving prepared foods and ready-meal industry, helping businesses address emerging challenges and meet consumer demand in this fast-paced market.

Dessert, Sweets & Bakery Exhibition

Specializing in desserts, bakery products, and cafe culture, this exhibition was a feast for the eyes. It was evident that Japan’s passion for premium confectionery and baked goods goes beyond tradition and is constantly evolving through innovation. The event highlighted the latest techniques, ingredients, and design trends that are redefining how sweet treats are crafted and savored. It was a powerful reminder of how thoughtful, well-designed packaging can elevate the experience of enjoying a product. Myerton Packaging is passionate about delivering for Australian dessert and bakery brands aiming to stand out in global markets.

The Future of Rice Exhibition

Dedicated to one of Japan’s most fundamental ingredients, this exhibition focused on promoting and reimagining rice and rice-based products. With the goal of revitalizing rice consumption and supporting the Japanese diet, the showcase introduced new uses and value-added products that give this staple a modern twist. It was inspiring to see how a traditional ingredient can be transformed to meet contemporary tastes and sustainability goals.

The most memorable stall we visited was San Ay’s stall, a nearly 100-year-old packaging company that seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Inspired by their decades-long success, we see great potential in taking cues from San Ay’s approach to build a business like Myerton Packaging. One that evolves with time while staying rooted in quality and innovation. Their ability to captivate customers even after nearly a century is a testament to their commitment to excellence and timeless design.

Takeaway

Our visit to Tokyo Big Sight was an eye-opening experience that gave us a deeper understanding of the packaging trends shaping the Japanese market. Seeing firsthand how packaging is evolving and learning more about what Japanese consumers value has better equipped us to help Australian brands expand globally. The emphasis on sustainability, thoughtful design, and practical functionality really hit home, showing us just how important it is to meet the highest standards if we want to succeed internationally.

For Myerton Packaging, this trip wasn’t just about gaining insights into what works in global markets, it’s also inspired us to raise the bar on the packaging solutions we offer to Australian businesses. With these fresh ideas in mind, we’re excited to keep pushing the envelope and help Australian producers stand out, especially in Japan, where quality is everything.
